Athens Food Tour

We went on an Athens Food Tour during our last afternoon in Athens.  The tour was about 4 hours through the Psyrri area including the Central Market.

We started out with Greek pastries.  Very good.

That's our tour guide Nasos on the right.  He spoke perfect English and was a great guide.

We are in a Greek coffee shop.  Here, coffee is made using a detailed specific process involving a bed of sand, pictured at left.

Nasos annouces the coffee is ready!

Now this is an amazing picture.  I have known these two individuals longer than almost anybody in my life and in all that time, I have never seen either of them drink a cup of coffee.  But they did today!

Walking through the Central Market in Athens.  Any type of seafood there is, they had it here, nice and fresh.

Head of lamb, anyone?

Every olive type there is was available here.  I love olives.  This was my bliss!

Fish.

More creatures from the sea.

Even Maryland Blue Crab!

In a restaurant, starting with Greek salad, unlimited olives, bread, and to wash it down, the famous Greek Ouzo!

Ouzo is a dry anise-flavored aperitif that is widely consumed in Cyprus and Greece.  It is made from rectified spirits that have undergone a process of distillation and flavoring. Its taste is similar to other anise liquors like pastis, sambuca, mastika, raki, and arak.   Ouzo is often served with a small plate of a variety of appetizers called mezes, usually small fresh fish, fries, olives, and feta cheese.

How did it taste?  Not my cup of tea.

More food, including calamari, which I love!

Did you know you can drink vinegar?  Balsamic vinegar, that is.  You can, and we did.  Plus Greek wines.  At a wine-tasting place.

There were only six of us on the tour.  The four of us and a nice couple pictured at left.

The tour ended with the famous Souviaki, which is to the Greeks what the hamburger is to Americans.  Souviaki is usually pork or chicken grilled on a little skewer.  When you get it to go, as we did here, the meat is wrapped in a pita pocket with lettuce, tomato, onions and cucumber-yogurt-garlic sauce.  We were all full by this time, so Nasos ordered our Souviakis to go, so we could take it with us and eat it later, which we did.  It was very tasty, by the way.

All four of us enjoyed the Athens Food Tour immensely.  Highly recommended if you are ever in Athens!
